Audiobooks

This summer I became an Audible.com subscriber and listener. I have a 23 mile commute to my studio and this gives me time to listen and absorb new thoughts.

I have long been a fan of ‘informative nonfiction’ or books that are about an idea or concept rather than a story. I have a room in my house lined with book shelves that are filled with such books. I love them. I love reading and perusing books. Yet I don’t often take time to actually sit down and read a book. In the car — I have time.

Since joining I have listened to:

A Curious Mind by Brian Grazer and Charles Fishman.
This is Brian’s account of meeting people and being curious as a practice and how it has affected his life and career. Very interesting!

The Charisma Myth by Olivia Fox Cabane
Effectively a course on how to have charisma in all areas of life, personal and career. The big take away is that having charisma is a lot about focusing on others, really on them and being present with them.

The Five Elements of Effective Thinking by Edward B. Burger and Michael Starbird.
These two mathematics professors talk about strategies that, if used, can lead to breakthroughs in thinking and problem solving. A great listen each of the two times I played it through.

Goddesses Never Age: The Secret Prescription for Radiance, Vitality and Well- Being by Dr. Christiane Northrup
While this book is clearly intended for women I knew after seeing her on Super Soul Sunday talking with Oprah that I would get a lot out of this information. I was right. Over 16 hours of Dr. Northrup reading her book with information about everything regarding aging you never knew you needed to know! WOW!

The Power of Joy: How the Deliberate Pursuit of Pleasure Can Heal Your Life by Dr. Christiane Northrup
This is actually a one hour lecture. She is so engaging and the information is so incredible that I listened to this four times.

The Power by Rhonda Byrne
You have probably heard of The Secret. It is a book and a movie that came out in 2006 to become a global hit. This is her second book — all about the law of attraction and its power. Useful information and examples of giving love every day and in any situation. It is six hours that could not be more powerfully spent!

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
While this is a work of fiction it is a book I have wanted to read for many years and just never got around to. When I saw it on the list I knew this was the way to go. And Jeremy Irons is the narrator. What could be better?! I liked it so much I thought it was something Thomas should listen to. So on the short drive to Daycare each morning we listen to it. Who knows if he is understanding anything at age two. It is still exposure to great ideas about personal legends and the universe “conspiring to give you everything you desire.”

Let me know if you have read or listened to any of these titles as well as what you do listen to.
